Basic MIG Welding

This course is designed for individuals who are required to undertake basic Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding activities within engineering, fabrication, agricultural, construction, maintenance, manufacturing and rural industry environments.

The programme provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to safely prepare, operate and maintain MIG welding equipment whilst producing basic welded joints to an acceptable standard. Learners will develop competence in equipment selection, material preparation, welding techniques, weld inspection and safe working practices through a combination of theory and practical application.

The course supports individuals who are new to welding as well as those seeking to formalise existing practical skills. Emphasis is placed on safe equipment operation, hazard awareness, quality control and the application of welding techniques in workplace settings where welded components are manufactured, repaired or maintained.

MIG welding remains one of the most widely used welding processes across industry due to its efficiency, versatility and suitability for a wide range of fabrication and repair tasks. Incorrect welding techniques, poor preparation, inadequate ventilation and unsafe working practices can result in serious injury, equipment damage, fire, exposure to hazardous fumes and defective welded components. This standard therefore promotes safe systems of work and competence-based practical application.
