This training course aims to give trainees knowledge, understanding and skills in the directional felling of large trees over 380mm using a chainsaw. It provides the trainee with the knowledge to select and use felling techniques appropriate to the size, weight, position, condition and species of the tree. Felling methods will include the use of boring cuts, holding cuts and felling wedges to assist with the felling. Felling methods for: upright/balanced trees; back-weighted trees; forward-weighted trees; poles difficult to fell trees (e.g. due to their high commercial value, condition, aspect or position); use of guidebars greater than the diameter of the tree The length of training may vary depending on the objectives covered, the ratio of trainee/instructor and the ability and previous experience of the trainees. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements.
