Arboriculture, Grounds Maintenance, Landscaping and Building, Plant & Machinery
This course is designed for individuals who need to safely maintain and operate a chainsaw to carry out cross-cutting, directional felling, de-limbing, snedding and processing of trees up to 200 mm diameter in forestry, arboriculture, estate management, agriculture, conservation, countryside management and other land-based industries.
Learners will develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional judgement required to inspect, maintain and operate a chainsaw safely whilst planning and undertaking felling operations in accordance with recognised industry good practice. Through a combination of classroom learning, practical instruction and competence-based assessment, learners will gain the confidence to prepare work sites, assess risks, select appropriate felling techniques, process timber safely and respond appropriately to changing site conditions.
Successful learners will be able to apply safe systems of work whilst carrying out chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting and small tree felling operations, minimising risks to themselves, others, property and the environment. The course develops competence in routine maintenance, operational inspections, safe starting procedures, timber assessment, directional felling, branch removal, processing techniques and the management of hung-up trees within the scope of the standard.
This UKRS Course Standard has been developed as an industry-accredited competence-based training and assessment standard designed to support safe operational practice. It is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification and does not constitute a regulated qualification within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) or any other UK regulated qualifications framework.
Where independently assessed competence is required for commercial forestry or arboriculture operations, learners may also need to successfully complete a separate NPTC/City & Guilds assessment in accordance with employer, client, insurer or contractual requirements. This UKRS certificate must not be represented as an independently assessed licence to practise.
