This basic Detection Dog Handler course has been designed to provide students with knowledge of the skills needed to work as a detection dog handler in the field of wildlife conservation. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the foundation practical applications of wildlife detection dogs in relation to different species and target odour as well as knowledge, understanding and skills in canine welfare and handling as well as welfare of the target species. Whilst this course is aimed at working in Wildlife detection, these skills can be transferred to all detection topics. The course covers the attributes required of both dog and handler, the equipment required, canine care, welfare and husbandry as well as handling, detection and foundation search skills. Please Note; this course DOES NOT give direct qualification as a dog handler, but does provide the basic knowledge and skills required to work in this field and is an ideal starting point. On completion of the course, there is a practical handler assessment to provide constructive feedback for onward improvement and progress as well as a written examination to test underpinning knowledge and understanding.
