Health and Safety
This course is designed for people who may be required to provide immediate emergency first aid to infants and children, including those working or volunteering within childcare, education, community, leisure and other environments where children may be present.
The course provides learners with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to recognise a paediatric emergency, assess the situation safely, obtain appropriate assistance and provide immediate first aid within the limits of their training until further medical assistance is available.
Learners will develop competence through tutor-led instruction, practical demonstration, supervised skills practice and realistic emergency scenarios involving both infants and children. Practical activities include casualty assessment, management of an unresponsive casualty, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), appropriate use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), management of choking, seizures, external bleeding, shock and other emergency situations within the scope of this standard.
The course supports the application of structured and proportionate emergency first aid procedures, including maintaining personal and casualty safety, minimising infection risks, summoning emergency assistance, monitoring casualty condition, communicating effectively and completing appropriate records following an incident.
Prompt and effective first aid can be critical where an infant or child becomes seriously ill or injured. Incorrect assessment, delayed intervention or inappropriate first aid may increase the risk of deterioration or harm. Training therefore places emphasis on recognising life-threatening conditions, prioritising appropriate interventions and working within the learner's level of competence.
This UKRS-accredited course provides competence-based training and assessment in Emergency Paediatric First Aid. It is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification and must not be represented as a regulated qualification or as completion of the full Paediatric First Aid programme where the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework requires a full paediatric first aid course.
