This training course aims to give trainees the knowledge, understanding and basic skills required for the safe operation of lorry loader cranes, commonly referred to as Hiab cranes. It introduces trainees to setting up and stabilising the vehicle, operating the crane to lift and place loads, and carrying out loading and unloading operations safely and efficiently. Trainees will cover daily pre-use inspections, safe lifting and slinging techniques, and the hazards and risks associated with lorry loader crane operations, including stability, load control, outrigger deployment, visibility, and working in proximity to people, plant, and structures. The course also includes safe systems of work, correct use of lifting accessories, and compliance with relevant health and safety legislation. The length of training may vary depending on the objectives covered, the ratio of trainee to instructor, and the ability and previous experience of the trainees. The delivery of training includes a combination of theoretical instruction and practical exercises.
