This course is designed for managers, supervisors and other individuals with decision-making responsibilities who wish to develop a structured and effective approach to making workplace decisions.
The course introduces the principles of decision making and considers the difference between minor and major decisions, including the effects of uncertainty, complexity, risk, available options and the potential impact on others. Learners consider their responsibilities when making decisions and the importance of understanding who has the authority and accountability for the final outcome.
Learners are introduced to a structured decision-making process covering setting appropriate time frames, determining responsibility, gathering relevant information, identifying possible options, considering risks, selecting the most appropriate option, recording the decision and communicating it effectively. The course also explores practical techniques including mind mapping, brainstorming, PESTLE and SWOT analysis and the use of decision balance sheets to compare potential options.
The course reinforces the importance of considering risk and organisational priorities, maintaining appropriate records and clearly communicating decisions and their reasoning to those who contributed to, are affected by or are responsible for implementing them.
