Manual Handling

This competence-based Manual Handling Course Standard has been developed to provide learners with the underpinning knowledge, practical skills and operational judgement required to safely carry out manual handling activities within a range of workplace environments. The programme supports employers, employees and contractors in reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injury, unsafe handling practices, lost-time incidents and operational inefficiency associated with poor manual handling activities. Delivery focuses on the practical application of safe handling principles, dynamic risk assessment, safe systems of work and workplace communication within realistic operational contexts. This Course Standard should be read alongside HSE guidance L23 Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992: Guidance on Regulations (4th edition). Relevant legislation includes but is not limited to: 1. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, 2. Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended), 3. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, 4. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), 5. Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR). National Occupational Standards (NOS) referenced include but are not limited to: 1. Maintaining health, safety and welfare within the workplace, 2. Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended by the Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations 2022), 3. Carrying out manual handling activities safely, 4. Contributing to workplace risk assessment processes, 5. Applying safe systems of work within operational environments.
