Safe Use of Brushcutters and Strimmers

This Course has been developed to provide learners with the knowledge, practical skills and operational competence required to safely prepare, operate and maintain brushcutters and strimmers within land-based, grounds maintenance, forestry, agricultural, estates, local authority and environmental management environments.

Brushcutters and strimmers present significant operational hazards including rotating cutting attachments, ejected debris, noise, vibration, manual handling risks, environmental hazards and risks to operators, third parties and property. Effective training and assessment are therefore essential to support safe working practice, legal compliance and operational competence.

This standard aligns with relevant legislation including, but not limited to, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended by the Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations 2022), Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR) and relevant environmental protection requirements.

The course supports operational competence aligned to National Occupational Standards (NOS) including but not limited to:
1. Maintain the health, safety and security of yourself and others.
2. Carry out risk assessments in the workplace.
3. Prepare and operate hand-held powered vegetation management equipment.
4. Maintain brushcutters and strimmers in accordance with manufacturer guidance.
5. Apply environmental good practice during vegetation management operations.
6. Work safely within land-based operational environments.
