This course is designed for individuals who are required to use workshop tools and equipment as part of their work and who need to develop the knowledge, practical skills and safe working practices necessary to select, prepare, operate, shut down and store equipment safely.
Learners will develop an understanding of the hazards associated with workshop activities and the control measures required to reduce risk, including appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), equipment guarding, pre-use inspection, safe operating procedures, dust and noise control, vibration exposure and effective housekeeping.
Through tutor-led instruction, demonstration and supervised practical activities, learners will develop competence in selecting suitable tools and attachments for the task, carrying out pre-use checks, preparing equipment correctly, operating within manufacturer limitations, responding appropriately to changing conditions and identifying and reporting defects. Learners will also develop safe practices for shutdown, cleaning and secure storage.
The course supports workplace application across workshops and other environments where powered and non-powered workshop equipment is used. Training must be contextualised to the equipment available and the activities learners are expected to undertake, while ensuring that the core safety and competence requirements of this Course Standard are achieved.
Workshop equipment can present significant risks where it is incorrectly selected, inadequately maintained, poorly guarded or used by individuals without appropriate competence. Hazards may include contact with moving or cutting components, entanglement, ejected material, electrical hazards, dust, noise, hand-arm vibration and risks arising from unsuitable working areas or defective equipment. Effective training, supervision, inspection and safe systems of work are therefore essential.
