This course is designed for individuals who are required to operate a compact tractor as part of their work and need to develop the knowledge, practical skills and competence required for safe operation on level ground.
Learners will develop an understanding of compact tractor controls, operating characteristics, capabilities and limitations, together with the hazards associated with machine operation, attachments, terrain, ground conditions, loads and the working environment. The course covers pre-use inspection, preparation, safe access and egress, starting and stopping, manoeuvring, selection and use of compatible attachments, operational safety, environmental considerations, parking, securing and post-use procedures.
Practical training enables learners to apply safe operating techniques under supervision and demonstrate competent control of the compact tractor and attachments appropriate to the activities undertaken. Learners will be required to assess the immediate working area, identify hazards, implement appropriate control measures and adapt their operation to site and environmental conditions.
The course supports employers and operators in establishing safe systems of work and demonstrating that persons operating work equipment have received appropriate information, instruction and training. Particular emphasis is placed on preventing overturning, loss of control, collision, crushing, entanglement, attachment-related incidents and risks to operators and other persons within the working area.
