Everything you need to know about UKRS accreditation
Whether you run an established training business or deliver specialist programmes in a niche sector, this section explains how UKRS accreditation works and what it means for your organisation.
UK Rural Skills (UKRS) is an independent accreditation and quality assurance organisation supporting training providers across a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, forestry, arboriculture, construction, workplace safety, animal care, canine, equine and specialist professional development industries.
Our role is to develop Course Standards, quality assure delivery and support training providers in offering high-quality, industry-led training that reflects current workplace requirements.
UKRS was developed specifically to serve the full breadth of land-based, rural and specialist industries, including sectors and specialisms that are not always well served by existing certification bodies.
Rather than replicating what already exists, UKRS provides a credible, flexible accreditation route for both established workplace training subjects and specialist programmes that may not fit within traditional certification frameworks. Our focus is on robust standards, quality assurance and workplace competence, regardless of sector.
No. UKRS is an accreditation and quality assurance organisation. We develop Course Standards, quality assure delivery and issue certificates to recognise successful completion of training. We do not issue regulated qualifications.
Yes. Existing courses can generally be reviewed and aligned with UKRS Course Standard requirements, helping providers achieve accreditation without necessarily redeveloping their entire programme. Contact us to discuss your specific programmes and we can advise on the accreditation process.
Yes. UKRS supports both established workplace training programmes and specialist sectors where recognised accreditation routes may not already exist, including animal care, canine, equine, rehabilitation, welfare and professional development specialisms.
All courses must meet UKRS quality assurance requirements and be supported by a documented Course Standard.
UKRS Course Standards are developed using relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS), where available, applicable legislation, industry guidance and recognised best practice. Standards are designed to reflect current workplace requirements and are reviewed periodically to ensure they remain relevant and up to date.
Our standards are also written to align with regulated level descriptors appropriate to the needs of the course, using learning outcomes and objectives aligned to the depth of knowledge and competence appropriate to the course.
UKRS is not an awarding organisation and does not issue regulated qualifications. However, UKRS Course Standards are written to align with regulated level descriptors appropriate to the needs of each course, using learning outcomes and objectives that reflect the depth of knowledge and competence required.
This means that whilst UKRS certificates are not regulated qualifications, the standards behind them are structured with the same rigour and depth, providing credible, evidenced training that employers and industry can rely on.
UKRS Course Standards are reviewed every 3 years, or when changes occur to legislation, National Occupational Standards, industry guidance or recognised best practice. This ensures that accredited training remains current and aligned with workplace requirements.
UKRS accredited training providers operate within a comprehensive quality assurance framework that includes:
EQA provides independent assurance that the standards behind the certificate are upheld in practice, not just on paper.

This section explains what a UKRS certificate represents, how it compares to other recognised training credentials, and how UKRS accreditation supports your obligations around staff training and competence.
A UKRS certificate demonstrates that training has been delivered against a documented UKRS Course Standard with defined minimum learning outcomes, assessment requirements and quality assurance arrangements, including independent External Quality Assurance.
A UKRS certificate represents training that has been delivered against a structured standard designed around workplace competence, recognised occupational standards, relevant legislation and industry best practice. Where the course includes assessment, it also provides evidence that the learner has demonstrated the required knowledge, skills or competence.
UKRS accredited training is delivered against documented Course Standards, mapped to National Occupational Standards where available and underpinned by External Quality Assurance. Employers across a wide range of sectors accept UKRS certificates as evidence of structured, competence-based training that reflects current workplace requirements and legal responsibilities.
Insurance requirements vary between providers and policies, so UKRS cannot speak to the requirements of individual insurers. However, UKRS accredited courses are delivered against documented standards mapped to National Occupational Standards, where available, legislation and recognised best practice, the same foundation that underpins any credible training certification.
Insurers are typically interested in evidence of appropriate training, recognised standards and quality-assured delivery, all of which UKRS accreditation provides. If you require supporting documentation about UKRS standards and quality assurance processes for an insurer, please contact us and we will be happy to assist.
National Occupational Standards define the knowledge, skills and performance requirements needed to carry out occupational activities competently. Mapping training to NOS helps ensure courses reflect recognised workplace expectations and industry requirements, and provides a consistent benchmark against which training can be assessed.
UKRS accredits training across the same workplace subjects and competence requirements that employers and industry recognise, including tractor driving, ATV operation, safe use of pesticides, working at height, MEWP operation, manual handling, fire safety, confined spaces and plant operations, alongside specialist programmes across animal care, canine, equine and professional development sectors.
Many UKRS courses include assessment of knowledge, practical skills or workplace competence. Assessment requirements vary depending on the subject and are clearly defined within the relevant Course Standard.
A UKRS certificate demonstrates that training has been completed against a documented Course Standard. Where applicable, courses include assessment of knowledge, practical skills or workplace competence. A UKRS accredited course is training delivered against a documented UKRS Course Standard and quality assurance framework. UKRS is an accreditation and quality assurance organisation, not an awarding organisation, which means we accredit training programmes and issue certificates to recognise successful completion rather than issuing regulated qualifications.
The most appropriate route will depend on your objectives, employer requirements and industry sector. Many industries and employers value UKRS accredited training because it is mapped to National Occupational Standards, where available, aligned with regulated level descriptors and supported by External Quality Assurance.
UKRS accredited courses are delivered within a comprehensive quality assurance framework. This includes approved instructors, documented Course Standards, internal quality monitoring by the training provider, learner feedback processes and External Quality Assurance, independent reviews conducted by UKRS to verify that courses are being delivered in accordance with the relevant standard.
This means you can be confident that a UKRS accredited course is not simply a badge on a certificate, the standards behind it are actively monitored and maintained.
UKRS supports a broad range of sectors including agriculture, forestry, arboriculture, construction, workplace safety, animal care, canine, equine, environmental and specialist professional development industries.
