Confined Spaces - Procedures Awareness

This course has been developed to provide learners with the underpinning awareness, procedural understanding and hazard recognition skills required to support safe working practices associated with confined space environments.

Confined spaces present significant workplace hazards including restricted access and egress, oxygen deficiency, toxic or flammable atmospheres, environmental hazards and emergency evacuation limitations. Failure to recognise these hazards or follow appropriate procedures can result in serious injury, ill health or fatality.

This programme has been designed to develop learner understanding of confined space terminology, legal responsibilities, hazard identification, permit-to-work systems, atmospheric hazards, communication procedures and emergency arrangements associated with low to medium risk confined space environments.

The course focuses on awareness and procedural understanding and is not intended to confirm operational confined space entry competence, rescue capability or breathing apparatus operator competence.

The Course Standard aligns with relevant legislation including but not limited to:

1. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
2. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
3. Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
4. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)

6. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
7. Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
8. Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR)

This Course Standard also aligns with relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS), including but not limited to:

1. Working safely in confined space environments
2. Following safe systems of work
3. Identifying workplace hazards and risks
4. Contributing to workplace health and safety arrangements
5. Following emergency procedures and communication systems
6. Using PPE and workplace safety equipment appropriately
7. Supporting safe operational practices within controlled environments

This programme is suitable for personnel who work around, support or may be exposed to confined space environments within sectors including agriculture, utilities, construction, facilities management, industrial maintenance and environmental operations.
