This course is designed for individuals who use or work around electrical equipment and require a basic understanding of electrical hazards, associated risks and appropriate workplace safety measures.
The course introduces responsibilities for electrical safety and considers how electrical hazards should be identified, assessed and controlled. Learners explore common hazards associated with electrical equipment, water and damp conditions, extension leads, underground electrical cables and overhead power lines, together with the application of the hierarchy of controls.
Learners develop an understanding of pre-use visual checks, faulty equipment, isolation from use, Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and regular in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. The course considers the importance of ensuring electrical repairs and testing are undertaken by appropriately competent persons and following relevant workplace procedures.
The course also examines common electrical incidents, including fires and explosions, electrical burns, electric shock and falls resulting from electrical incidents. Learners consider appropriate emergency actions and the importance of reporting electrical incidents and dangerous occurrences in accordance with workplace procedures and applicable requirements.
Overall, the course aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to recognise common electrical hazards, follow appropriate control measures and work safely around electricity and electrical equipment.
