Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery and Tools

The Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery and Tools programme has been developed to provide learners with the knowledge, practical skills and workplace competence required to safely inspect, prepare, operate, maintain and store woodworking machinery and associated powered woodworking tools.

Woodworking machinery remains widely used throughout construction, joinery, furniture manufacture, estate maintenance, agricultural workshops, educational settings, heritage restoration, maintenance operations and general manufacturing environments. The operation of woodworking machinery presents significant risks including entanglement, contact with moving parts, ejection of materials, dust inhalation, vibration exposure, noise exposure and serious cutting injuries.

This programme supports employers, employees, contractors, apprentices and self-employed individuals who are required to use woodworking machinery and tools safely and effectively within workplace environments.

Relevant legislation includes but is not limited to:
1. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
2. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998
3. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
4. Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended)
5. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002
6. Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005
7. Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005
8. Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
9. Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 2013.

The standard aligns with National Occupational Standards (NOS), including but not limited to:
1. Preparing, setting up and maintaining woodworking machinery and equipment.
2. Operating woodworking machinery and powered woodworking tools safely and effectively.
3. Applying health, safety and environmental controls within manufacturing and workshop environments.
