Arboriculture, Grounds Maintenance, Landscaping and Building
This course is designed for individuals who are required to access trees safely using climbing techniques and undertake aerial rescue operations as part of arboriculture forestry, estate management, local authority, utility, conservation or land-based work activities. It is suitable for those entering tree climbing operations, those developing operational competence, and experienced personnel requiring structured refresher training.
Learners will develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional judgement required to safely inspect climbing equipment, assess work sites, access trees using recognised climbing systems, establish safe work positioning, plan and implement aerial rescues, and recover both conscious and unconscious casualties whilst maintaining the safety of themselves and others.
Through a combination of tutor-led theory, practical instruction, realistic rescue scenarios and competence-based assessment, learners will develop confidence in applying industry good practice, dynamic risk assessment, effective communication, emergency planning and safe systems of work within arboriculture environments.
The course prepares learners to undertake tree climbing and aerial rescue activities in accordance with current legislation, recognised industry guidance and organisational procedures. It promotes the safe selection, inspection and use of climbing and rescue equipment whilst reinforcing the importance of rescue preparedness before work at height commences.
This Course Standard has been developed as a UKRS-accredited competence-based training and assessment standard. It is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification and does not constitute a regulated qualification within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) or any other UK regulated qualifications framework.
For higher-risk commercial arboriculture operations, employers, clients, insurers or contractual arrangements may require independently assessed qualifications or certificates of competence in addition to training. This UKRS Course Standard provides an industry-aligned framework for developing and assessing competence but should not be interpreted as a substitute where independent assessment is specified.
